CONVERSATIONAL
LEADERSHIP
This
is not about becoming chit chat conversationalists, but rather about
the ability of people in organisations to have deep heart-felt conversations
that matter across the organisation (not just within own workteam)
about issues of real concern that will help them and the organisation
work towards their aspirations and vision. Coaching could be said
to be one form of guided conversation; rather than coaching individuals,
however, Open 2 Flow is more concerned about facilitating group
conversations with a view of harnessing collective wisdom. We could
also call this facilitative leadership.
What
we find in organisations are lots of people having lots of meetings,
many of which perceived as quite meaningless and unproductive, what
we don't see much of are authentic conversations and communication
that really matters. This is the area Conversational Leadership
seeks to address.
We
facilitate 3 kind of activities:
- OPEN
SPACE DELIBERATIONS
- WORLD
CAFE PROBLEM-SOLVING
- GEMBA
WALKS THROUGH FLOW OF ORGANISATION
Both
Open Space and World Cafe are designed to enable participants
to have deep conversations that matter, unleashing co-creativity
and inspiration by listening to the hearts and minds of all. The
approach is holistic and allows the tacit knowledge of participants
and community to be drawn out to resolve highly complex issues.
Open Space, based on a 'marketplace' of issues, is largely self-organising,
whereas World Cafe is more structured and is better suited for solving
specific problems collectively where time is very limited. Please
click here for video introduction to Open Space, and
more information.
Gemba
Walks also encourages conversations that matter but in a completely
different way. Here we're dealing with leaders in an organisation
following the organisational, operational or communication flow
with a view of identifying bottlenecks and blockages which are preventing
a smooth achievement of aims. Following the principle of "go
see, ask why and show respect" those most in the know in the
flow are able to articulate some of the key issues with a view of
discovering solutions to improve flow. Click here for more
information.
Although
we use the three approaches predominantly, we assist organisations
find alternative forms collective thinking using a number of other
techniques too:
- dynamic
facilitation
- u-presencing
- appreciative
inquiry
- future
search
- change
journey mapping etc
